A complete list of standards and description of each ASA Course is also contained in the ASA Official International Log Book.  These are minimum standards and all parts must be completed before an ASA Certification is achieved.  A candidate may "Challenge" or take the required ASA examination for any course if they feel they have attained the stated prerequisites.

Basic Keelboat Sailing (101)

Prerequisites: None

 General Course Description: Sailors must sail a keelboat of about 20 feet in length in light to moderate wind and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision.  A preparatory Standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required.  Successful candidates earn a National Safe Boating Certification approved by NSBA and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Basic Coastal Cruising (103)

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification

 General Course Description: Able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary sailboat of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.

Bareboat Chartering (104)

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising Certification

 General Course Description: An advanced cruising Standard for individuals with cruising experience.  The individual can act as skipper or crew of a 30 to 50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters.  The Standard includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.  

Basic Coastal Cruising (103) Bareboat Chartering (104)

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification  

 General Course Description: This Combination Course covers both 103 and 104 material.  We sometimes offer this course as a three (3) day class. See both 103 and 104 course descriptions for information on what is covered.

 Coastal Navigation (105)

Prerequisites: None

 General Course Description: Able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a vessel in coastal or inland waters.  There is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard and practical application of this Sailing Knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.

Advanced Coastal Cruising (106)

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering and Costal Navigation Certification.

General Course Description: An advanced cruising standard for individuals with cruising experience. The individual can act as skipper or crew of a 30-50 foot boat sailing by day and night in coastal and inland waters in any conditions.

Celestial Navigation (107)

              Prerequisites: None

 General Course Description: Able to demonstrate the Celestial Navigation theory required to safely         navigate a sailboat on an offshore passage.  The practical application is conducted in the Offshore Passage making Standard.

Offshore Passage-making (108)

Prerequisites: All previous Keelboat and Navigation Standards

 General Course Description: The student is able to safely act as skipper or crew in a sailing vessel on offshore passages requiring celestial navigation.

  Basic Small Boat Sailing (110)

Prerequisites: None

General Course Description: Able to sail a centerboard or multi-hull sailboat in light to moderate wind and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision.  A preparatory Standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required.

Trailer-able Multi-hull (113)

            Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat

General Course Description: Certified sailors are able to cruse safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary multi-hull sailboat of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.  The Standards include those skills different and or unique to a multi-hull, either catamaran or trimaran including folding and trailering.

Cruising Catamaran (114)

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat (101) and Basic Coastal Cruising (103).  The Bareboat Charter Standard (104) is also a prerequisite and can be attained either by itself prior to BBC Multi-hull (114) or in conjunction with BBC Multi-hull (114).  In either case, ALL MATERIALS IN BOTH STANDARDS 104 & 114) MUST BE TAUGHT AND TESTED BEFORE 114 CAN BE AWARDED.

 General Course Description: An advanced cruising Standard for individuals with cruising experience.  The individual can act as skipper or crew of a 30 to 50 foot multi-hull sailboat by day in coastal waters.  The Standard includes those skills unique to a 30 to 50 foot multi-hull.
